New Years Adventure
Dec 27: Arrival @06:35 – Golden Circle + Glacier
Our driver-guide will pick you up after your arrival at the Keflavik International Airport and it’s probably best to start with stopping somewhere for breakfast before starting the adventure. It doesn’t get light until late so it’s good to take an easy morning. We drive from the airport, through the edges of Reykjavik and to Þingvellir National Park. This is one of the best places in the world to see the tectonic plate boundaries and it’s the site of the Viking Parliament founded in 930. This is where the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates meet, having formed a crevice while slowly drifting apart. More recently it’s known as one of the shooting locations for Game of Thrones. From Þingvellir we drive to Geysir to see the geyser Strokkur explode 100ft into the air every few minutes and to Gullfoss to see this beautiful waterfall half frozen cacading down a 100ft. Grab some lunch before heading up to Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjokull where you blaze across the ice cap on snowmobiles. After this fun in the snow in the wilderness, we head back, perhaps stop for a coffee at one of the cafés before it’s time to drive to our hotel for the night. If the skies are clear, you might be able to see the Northern Lights in the evening.
Activity included: Snowmobiling on the Glacier
Accommodation: Hotel in South Iceland
Dec 28: Around Eyjafjallajökull Volcano & ATV’s
It’s less than half an hour’s drive to the foothills of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano that stopped all the air traffic in Europe in 2010. We turn off the main road onto a mountain track with unbridged rivers to cross and drive to the north side of the volcano to get as close to the eruption area as possible. Driving across all the unbridged rivers is a fun adventure and the landscape is quite stunning. On the way back to the main road we stop at the freefalling waterfall Seljalandsfoss which you can actually walk behind. Half an hour later you are on the south shore where you go on a fun ATV tour on the black sand beach. On the way back to the hotel we stop at Skogafoss. If the skies are clear, you might be able to see the Northern Lights in the evening.
Activity included: ATV Tour @15:00 4 x solo rides (be there @14:30)
Accommodation: Hotel in South Iceland
Dec 29: Glacier Hike & South Shore
We start simarly as the day before, with a short drive to Sólheimajökull, the southern most glacier in Iceland where you go on a glacier hike to explore blue ice and crevices, with crampons and ice axes. After the glacier adventure we head to Dyrholaey to see the Atlantic Ocean bashing against the lava cliffs, arches and hexagon basalt against the black sand. Nearby is also Reynisdrangar, lava pillars rising from the ocean just of the black sand volcanic beach. We can see them both from the west side and also from the east side at the town of Vík. On the way from Vík to our hotel for the night, we drive through the largest lava flow that has flowed on Earth in historical times and hopefully the grand finale of the day will be dancing auroras in the sky.
Activity included: Glacier Hike @ 10:00 am (be there @09:30)
Accommodation: Hotel in South Iceland
Dec 30: Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
We start the day by driving further east. There is a phenomenal view of Vatnajokull on the route, the largest glacier in Europe, on one side and black sand beaches on the other. Our destination is Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where majestic icebergs have broken from the glacier and float in the lagoon. Seals are often seen here, swimming in the water or sunbathing on the icebergs. In summer there are boat tours on the lagoon but in winter it’s mostly frozen and even more majestic. On the way back we visit Svinafellsjökull which is a Game of Thrones location, Skaftafell and you can hike up to Svartifoss waterfall. Hopefully the grand finale of the day will be dancing auroras in the sky. Accommodation: Hotel in South Iceland
Dec 31: Horseback Riding & Back to Reykjavik for New Years
We drive back to Reykjavik, explore the sights that we didn’t have enough time on the way out and stop at a horse farm where you go horse back riding in the countryside. Once in Reykjavik, we suggest our driverguide takes you to the voluntary Mt. Search & Rescue to buy fireworks for the evening. ‘When in Rome…’ Every Icelander shoots up fireworks so around midnight there will be fireworks going off at every single home in Reykjavik and of course you should too.
Note: We need to make dinner reservations for you as few restaurants are open and they will all be full.
Activity included: Horseback Riding, Hestheimar @ 13:30
Accommodation: Hotel in Reykjavik

Jan 2: West Iceland + Glacier
In the morning your private guide will pick you up at 9 am and you start by driving around Hvalfjörður fjord to Deildartunguhver, Europe’s largest hot spring. From there it’s a short drive to Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. Lunch stop at Húsafell before going to the west side of Langjökull glacier where you go into the ice tunnel, a man made ice cave in the ice cap. On the way back we go through another tunnel, this time under the fjord, shortening the drive back to Reykjavik.
Activity included: Into the Glacier / Ice Tunnel
Accommodation: Hotel in Reykjavik
Jan 3: Departure from KEF airport @17:00
Easy morning in Reykjavik, perhaps checking out the January sales on the main shopping street Laugavegur or exploring the city a bit on your own before a private car picks you up at the hotel at 14:00 and takes you to the airport so that you are there at least 2 hours before your flight.
